MLA offers the Montana Library Assistance Helpline to provide legal information on issues affecting Montana libraries.  Library leaders can submit requests to the Helpline to receive guidance on matters requiring legal compliance such as policy development, intellectual freedom, open-meetings law, local government relations, and other operational matters.  It is not provided as a service to address personal matters. MLA volunteers may redirect inquiries that are not consistent with this intent.

The Helpline seeks to ensure Montana libraries have access to essential legal resources and support.

To submit an inquiry, send a summary of the matter and contact information to helpline@mtlib.org.  One of MLA’s trained volunteers will respond to your message within 24 to provide necessary information, guidance and support.

Disclaimer: The Helpline provides general legal information, and does not provide legal advice.  Each response to an inquiry will include this reminder.  However, MLA may assist library leaders in offering contact information for legal service providers if specialized legal counsel is needed.  Any decision to retain counsel is exclusive to the library and not the responsibility of MLA.
